My wife and I took the Sunset Limited from Maricopa to New Orleans, then about two weeks later, returned on the Sunset Limited. We rented a car in New Orleans and drove through Georgia and northern Florida.

Overall, the service onboard was excellent. I have seen a steady increase in the quality of onboard service in the past twenty years. There were few people on the train, probably due to COVID. Few people were in the diner, so typically at every meal, we would sit there for an hour or two and talk with employees or other riders.

Station attendants at both ends were polite and helpful.

We were very disappointed with the quality of food in the diner, but we hope this is only due to COVID. The meals are prepackaged. We hope that when life returns to normal, real dining car food will also return.

Moses in the dining car was excellent. He worked hard, and always made everyone feel welcome. He was an enjoyable part of the journey.

We were generally on time, maybe an hour late at the most. Many of the conductors were very nice and announced things well. Others were down right rude, and never explained anything.

Overall, we were very happy with our train trips, in both directions.

I guess good and bad conductors, on Amtrak, is pretty much standard fare. I was hoping that Amtrak could devote a fraction of the 80 billion toward improving meals on board. But, probably just wishful thinking.
