The following "Notice to ONTC passengers" is posted on the Ontario Northland website, at http://www.ontarionorthland.ca/index.php/en/passenger-trains-and-buses/northlander-train:

"After September 28, 2012, the Northlander train will no longer be in service. The Northlander will operate on its usual schedule until its closure. Every community served by the Northlander train is also served by ONTC motor coach service. This bus service will continue as usual. The Polar Bear Express train service between Cochrane and Moosonee, and the Niska I ferry sailing between Moosonee and Moose Factory Island will continue scheduled service.

"For more information about ONTC passenger service please speak to a ticket agent at 1-800-461-8558 or visit the schedule information page on this website."

While the southernmost 143 kilometers of the Northlander's route, between Toronto and Washago, are duplicated by VIA's Canadian (and the portion between Toronto and Richmond Hill is also duplicated by GO Transit's commuter rail service), the remainder of the route--some nine hours' worth of daytime travel--are unique to that train. Aficionados of rural Canadian trackside scenery may therefore want to seriously consider making a last trip at some time during the approximately four remaining weeks of service.
