It would appear that passenger trains essentially became defunct during the Pinochet regime, but since he got the boot, it appears that the Chilean railways has been on an initiative to restore their intercity and commuter services. Here is an article from the UK's Railway Gazette: http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/single-view/view/record-investment-boosts-efe39s-passenger-business.html And more from the UK's International Rail Journal: http://www.railjournal.com/index.php/commuter-rail/commuter-rail-booms-in-chile.html Here is a You Tube video covering a ride on their Premier intercity train (this may be staged propaganda - it looks "just too slick"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZjuJwkNMtU Here is the Chilean Railways page for the intercity service (en Espanol): http://www.tmsa.cl/link.cgi/ And surely no surprise, Mr. Seat 61 has "been there done that": http://www.seat61.com/SouthAmerica.htm#Chile
