Seems to have gone from “two quarters of ‘negative growth’ in a row” to “a broad-based contraction in the economy” or something.

Mr. Helfner, many a pundit as you suggest has a definition of a recession.

My take; when a population's sentiment becomes "I was better XXXX period ago, e.g. a year ago, "pre-COVID", when Joe took office, than I'm now" you have a recession.

Recession is "in the peoples mind" rather than in any group of "Leading Economic Indicators" that the economists proclaim and the pundits that feed off them.

And finally, any number of the noted "populations" could easily comprise voters - especially those (may I say myself?) who are "independent".
