O.K. your rail fans... you are getting me hooked on this stuff...

Never, ever been on a train... Going 7200 miles starting Tuesday...

I work for GE... have been with 'em for 17 years... I couldn't tell a GE Engines from any other.... I can tell you all the different CT scanners, MRI, etc... I haven't a clue about locomotives...

What is the consist of Silver Star, Capitol Limited, SWC, Sunset Limited.

How can I tell if GE is pulling us along?

Haven't personally been on the others but I can tell you that your consist on the Capitol Limited will likely be as follows. Definitely try to sit on the right side of the train facing foward eastbound or left side westbound as the views between Pittsburgh and Washington are Great!

2 P42 Engines
1 Baggage Car
1 Superliner Crew Dorm Car
2 Superliner Sleeper Cars
1 Superliner Dining Car
1 Superliner Lounge Car
2-3 Superliner Coach Cars
4-5 Freight Cars

maxmarch,
Thanks. Your post reminded me about my first Amtrak trip in May 1997.....

To answer your question, the SWC and the SL will be pulled by GE (P-42's) unless there's some major problems with the engines.

Here's some pictures:

Enjoy.... If you want more pictures, I have several of my May 2003 TE, SWC, and SL trip.

Silver Star consist from Feb 02

2 GE P-42
1 Mail Car
1 Baggage Car
2 Viewliner Sleepers
1 Diner (kitchen rear)
1 A-II Lounge
4 A-ii coaches

Sunset Consist Same time frame:

2 GE P-42
1 Dorm (all cars S-II)
2 Sleepers
1 Diner
1 Lounge
3 Coaches
1 Dorm (DH SFA-NOL)
1 Box Express (JAX-NOL)

Also equipment from #29 (Capitol Ltd) makes a same day continuation to #3 (SW Chief) - don't know how much more of an iron clad guaranteed connection there can be.

Also keep your eyes peeled on #3 when passing through Clarendon Hills 18 miles out of CHI - you might see 140lbs of Black Newfoundland giving someone a walk.
