I've read through various articles, and from what I understand, there is a difference between "diner lite" and "simplified dining service". Which is going to be in effect this summer on the California Zephyr? Does anyone have any info on the reconfiguration of the Sightseer Lounge car? Anyone have pics?
Thanks, guys. Just booked a little trip for late June from Omaha to Chicago.

My understanding is that "simplified dining service" is what presently, or soon to be, exists on the LD's, save the Empire Builder and Auto Train which will both continue indefinitely with pre-existing Food & Beverage service.

Diner Lite refers to the conversion of the existing fleet of Superliner Diners and Lounges to generic Food Service cars so that during periods of light partonage, only one such car need be assigned to a train.

Simplified Dining will be in effect on all trains, except for the Empire Builder and Auto Train, this summer. May 24th is supposed to be the final cutoff date for the remaining trains.
Simplified Dining involves 1 waiter, 1 cook, and use of pre-prepared food, served on plastic ware, with metal utensils.
To read the corporate BS about Simplified Dining, read:

In addition to Chris's pictures, I have my own at:

Diner Lite is the term coined for Amtrak's new food server that is supposed to roll out in 2007-2008. It will combine the Diner and Lounge cars into one car. Also, food service (complete meals plus snacks) is expected to be offered continuously from 6:30AM-11PM.
