A long trip became even longer for more than 100 Amtrak passengers.
An Amtrak Train derailed at about 3:15 this afternoon in Beaumont between Crockett Street and Avenue C.
The train jumped off the tracks about five minutes after it left the Beaumont train station.
No one was hurt, but passengers say they could feel a bump.
The train originated in California and was scheduled to arrive in New Orleans around four o'clock this afternoon.
Passengers helped Amtrak employees remove luggage from the cargo carts and waited for buses to arrive to take them to their final destination.
Union Pacific is over the railroad tracks where the derailment happened, and the company's investigators will determine what caused the derailment.

From the looks of the cars, it appears that the following cars derailed:
Snack Coach
Coach (accessible coach?)
Coach Baggage

Anyone notice the tracks beside Amtrak? They look warped, too.

The photo looks like it was taken from afar with a zoom lens. This exaggerates the deficiences in the track.

Pure speculation but it looks like there is some switch and crossing work in advance of that signal, which may have been a cause/factor.

I wonder how bad of damage the coaches recieved. I saw them yesterday back on the track sitting in UP yard. Amtrak is running out of coaches. The extra funding this year could buy/repair coaches but how long will that take.

That cross track is the BNSF line going to the Goodyear refinery on I-10.

A train derailment in Beaumont prompted police to evacuate several businesses.

Police say about six cars on the Union Pacific train derailed at about 9 a.m. Wednesday near Avenue C and 4th Street.

One car is on its side, and the car has a placard indicating it might be carrying a corrosive material, potassium hydroxide.

Police went door to door, evacuating businesses from 4th to MLK and Cedar to Crockett.

Police detoured traffic around the area.

No injuries have been reported. A hazardous materials team is responding, along with the Beaumont Fire Department, because there had been a report that one of the cars might be leaking.

So far, investigators can't find a leak.

Will Amtrak cancel or reroute?
Could Amtrak not take KCS south line to Lamar University, then west on a branch line to UP north back to Sunset route.
