7 pm March 14th. For the last 2 hours the Capital Limited enroute to Chi has been sitting at the station in Rockville , MD ( a suburb of DC) A suspicious package was found by the conductor. All rail traffic is stopped not only Amtrak but all the local as well. Metro is businig people between stations but no word as to the passengers on the Capital, The bomb squad is there but no word as to what is taking so long. (never a dull moment!!)

Oh boy. Can't blame the authorities -- they've got to check out these things.

I'd love to know what Amtrak is doing to watch out for our safety. I have nightmares of a dirty nuke exploding in the baggage car just as a long-distance train arrives at Chicago Union Station during rush hour.

suspicious packages seem to be a way of life in the DC area. The capitol, white house and various sites all ovee the city are favorite ones. Thankfully, all have been hoaxes so far. Lets hope it stays that way.
At Union Station and in Alexandria one must show a picture ID before the baggage is checked. As to what Amtrak is doing I doubt they will make a public announcement. It would seem secrecy is the best way to go.

In Milwaukee I'm frequently near the Airport Amtrak station. About every other time I've been there, a county sheriff deputy or two is inspecting the train, inside and out. I imagine similar things are occuring in other locations.
