Has anyone on this forum yet stayed at this new hostelry? It sounds interesting, much like the great old Izaak Walton Inn.

It's just five hours on the Southwest Chief from Chicago, where I live.

And it's only five miles south of a little general aviation airport -- foamers who are also pilots and airplane owners could indulge in both their passions in one swell foop. The manager of the Inn says she'll send a courtesy van to pick up anyone at the airport.

Hi Henry,

I stayed at the Depot Inn back in December for the TrainWeb 10th party.

The hotel is AMAZING. It has railroad memorabilia all over, and you can get a suite with a memory foam mattress, 47" flat screen TV, and a leather couch for about $120. The hotel also provides full transportation between the La Plata Amtrak station, and the Kirksville Airport. I HIGHLY recommend this place to just about anyone!

I will be staying at the Depot Inn again this Friday and Saturday night for Chris Guenzler’s million mile trip.

La Plata (name means "the silver") is also an interesting little midwest town in its own right; with friendly townsfolk including the occasional Amish buggy rolling down peaceful streets. And all the action on the great Marceline Subdivision of the BNSF! See you guys on #4 later this evening @ FUL...

Oh boy. I'm gonna plan to fly my little two-seater down to the airport near La Plata and stay two nights with a full day of trainwatching. And if the weather's bad and I can't fly, I'll just hop aboard No. 3 in Chicago instead. Won't have to destroy my exchequer for a sleeper room, either!

I second the great opinion of the Depot Inn. I was there also for the TrainWeb anniversary back in December. Neat place. Like finding gold in the middle of flyover country. I'll be there again this Friday night as I'm traveling on #4 out of Fullerton tonight. I'm not from Southern California, so I'm blowing some time in-between hotel checkout time and time to leave for Union Station (to take Metrolink to FUL) here at Universal City. Citywalk is a nice place, but REALLY touristy with lots of little shops selling worthless junk (aka: souveneirs). See you folks tonight!
