I arrive on the westbound California Zephyr into SLC at 11PM-ish, and I expect the train is going to be hours late. I am also departing on the eastbound California Zephyr a week later (I'm going to Jackson WY in between), supposedly 4AM-ish (and again I know the train will be late). I am always a tiny bit nervous about middle-of-night arrivals and departures but am hoping this will not be a problem--I have all-night taxi numbers from my hotel and the hotel people say it shouldn't be. Does anyone have any tips, experiences, advice etc etc.?

I caught the westbound CZ from SLC on-time in April 2002 and returned five days later only one hour late on the eastbound CZ.

The on-time performance of this train has dropped significantly since then though. Good that you have taxi phone numbers just in case BUT there were a handful of cabs that met the eastbound train at O-dark-thirty. I was able to get one without any problem. The SLC station is open at train time and it's a warm, safe place. SLC can be pretty chilly at night no matter what time of year you arrive.
