Nice article and thanks for sharing.

NARP certainly has had a role to play for going on 40 years now......though their continued existance probably depends on getting along with folks on both sides of the aisle. Taking up any clarion call could limit anything NARP might accomplish down the road.

Mr. Supporter, I think it important when posting links from newsources that when such is opinion, as in the case with the material you submitted, it should be labeled as such.

As further clarification, the columnist Derrick Jackson is resident with the Boston Globe (NYTimes Co). This is why the thoughts expressed appear to be focused on Northeast passenger operations. There is evidently a syndication arrangement between the Seattle PI (Hearst) and the Globe.

But I agree with the columnist; I'm all for passenger rail - where it belongs in the 21st century.

Thanks for locating such.

What do you mean by that? They mention expanding rail service far more than Obama ever does.

Funny thing is that Mr. Jackson points out that being a "friend of Detroit" means being an "enemy of Amtrak"; but really, has that been the case? Detroit and the US automobile industry is at its lowest point in history in spite of heavy Amtrak enmity. Over in Germany, Deutsche Bahn is flourishing, as well as Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Opel and Mercedes-Benz, and this in spite of gasoline being $8.72 per US gallon (although in truth, the Germans are getting angry with that aspect of the status quo). Perhaps being a true friend of Detroit, in reality, is not mutually exclusive to being a friend of Amtrak and vice-versa?
