I have AGR reservations on #5 departing CHI August 13th. I wonder if anyone knows if that train will be affected by the Wyoming detour. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but somehow I would like to know. It is so hot in Austin .....how can I last 5 more weeks until my 2 week vacation?
My trip down to San Antonio went well last weekend. We arrived about 80 minutes early, right after 9pm with fireworks happening. The station is right next to the Alamodome in downtown SA and it was really hopping that night. In our long tortuous entry into the city we passed right behind the old Mopac depot which I recognized from discussions on this list. The trip home Mon morning was uneventful.

Good news: If you go to the Amtrak website and put in your travel date and departure and arrival cities, you will find that for August 13 you are not scheduled for the detour.

To find the scheduled detour days, after you put in your arrival and departure cities and click to see the train number/name and times, you will see above the schedule a link that says "Service Alert/Motorcoach Service To and From Most Stations Between Denver and Salt Lake City." If you click that link you will see the scheduled dates when trains 5 and 6 (the Zephyr westbound and eastbound) will be making the Wyoming detour—i.e., the train goes its normal route between Chicago and Denver and between Salt Lake City and Emeryville but detours through Wyoming between Denver and Salt Lake City, and because of the detour, people boarding or getting off on most of the usual stops between Denver and Salt Lake City (Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Provo, etc) must take a motorcoach. According to that link, the scheduled dates for these detours in August are August 1-9 and August 16-24.

Of course, there is always the possibility of a last-minute change that could force the train on August 13 to take the detour even though one is not scheduled, but that is not usual.

Hey Austin, TX---throw some of your heat my way! The Bay area (California) is FREEZING at night, and the mornings aren't any better. We're lucky if we hit 80 degrees lately. It sure doesn't feel like summer to me. I'm sitting here planning an August vacation, and I'm trying to pick somewhere that is HOT and feels like summer. I'm looking at Orlando, New York City, Washington DC, and South Carolina. Not sure where to go yet.....(it will be via plane---NOT Amtrak).

Skip the Northeast ---- we are still waiting for summer.
At this point we would be grateful for just a day without rain. A little sun even if it came with no heat would be a welcome.

Today's high was 77º

Head our way Smitty. SC in August is guaranteed to be in the 90'3 with a similar humidity. Most locals try to head for the mountains - even the beach can be too hot.

The weather in the NE has been cool and the rainiest on record, with more rain predicted--yech! However, usually the weather changes by August. At least, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. . . .

The NorthEast is STILL like that?? I'm glad you told me. I was assuming it had gotten hot and humid by now. No???? Hmmmm.....maybe I should visit the NASCAR race shops in North Carolina, rent a car, and check out South Carolina, too. Hmmm......now I need to make a decision.
