I have always given low marks for Amtrak advertising in the local markets, outside the NEC.

So, I was very surprised to see them in action last night. My wife and I attended a baseball game between the Atlanta Braves' AAA team and the nearby Charlotte Knigths (White Sox affiliate).

In walking to our seats, we were summoned by a lady at a table along the main concourse to enter the contest for a free round trip for 4 on Amtrak, Charlotte-Washington. Of course we got into quite a discussion and ended up with two slick looking Amtrak water bottles, a handful of luggage tags, and a system timetable.

During the game, they were featured on several PA announcements. Although she was an Amtrak guest services person, I suspect NC DOT was involved as on the goody bag with Amtrak logo, there was the bytrain.org web site used for the state sponsored trains. In any event, it was good to see. And no we didn't win - hopefully a first time Amtrak rider got the prize.

I think it may be a little different during football season in the markets between Salisbury and Raleigh. I remembered a lot of local Carolina Panther fans took the rail back and forth on game day.

North Carolina has a great Amtrak service. Wouldn't surprise me if they did that.
