If I use AGR points for a roomette or a bedroom does that include railfare for two people? I've sent a query to AGR but thought I'd get a quicker answer here. Thanks, in advance.

I'm 99% sure that the AGR points include the accommodation charge and railfare for one person---but not railfare for two people. In other words, the extra person would have to pay railfare only but not an accommodation charge....

AGR definitely includes railfare for up to the number of persons the room is designed to accommodate. I have used AGR points for a famil bedroom and railfare was included for all 3 of us. Had we a second child, it would have covered 4. Both roomettes and deluxed bedrooms can sleep 2 thus railfare is included for up to that number of people. Meals are also included for all the same number of people. I've redeemed at least 10 times to date.

Is this something new? On one of the rare occasions that I traveled with someone, I used AGR points for a Deluxe Sleeper and that covered the room and my railfare. My traveling partner had to purchase railfare only.

Not new Smitty, I have also always received rail fare for two using my AGR points for either a roommette or a bedroom.

Well hmmmmmm.....how come I had to pay rail fare for an additional person? Frank--did you hear back from your email to AGR?

Okay, so my curiosity got the better of me and I just got off the phone with AGR. Yup----you can have as many people in a room as the room is published to hold (ie, economy sleeper 2 people, family bedroom, 2 adults and 2 kids)---all for the same points. So for 2 people to travel in one zone in a sleeper, it's 15,000 points----the same as if the person was traveling alone.

I wonder why I had to pay railfare for the extra person on my trip three years ago????

Smitty--

All I can think of is that you might not have included them in the original reservation. Were they added later?

Ya know, that is very possible. I'm trying to remember how we planned it, and I think I added her a week before departure (and I had my AGR ticket a few months before departure). I think you're right Frank, that must have been what happened. Thanks!

Here's the word from AGR:

Thank you for contacting the Amtrak Guest Rewards Service Center.

The points redeemed for a roomette/sleeper accommodation include up to 2
people in the accommodation. Rail fare, accommodation fare, and meals
are included as well.

BTW, we've rethought the whole idea of using the train to get from JAX to MIA. We are going to do the JAX trip later and just concentrate on getting to MIA to start a 26 day adventure.

I don't know, Smitty, I think Amtrak secret spies know it's you, and figured to screw you for complaining about mediocrity! [Wink]

I can just hear them now, "he thinks we're not top notch? We'll show him!"

You could be right RR4me....Maybe I should hire a protective security detail. [Big Grin]

Actually, I believe you can now pick up Amtrak Guest Rewards tickets from ticket windows (and perhaps machines) right before travel, so you wouldn't have the problem of a late addition, I don't think. Though I could be wrong!

Yes you can pick tix up at a staffed station anytime before travel.

FYI - they won't tell you this unless you ask but if you book a bedroom (not a roomette) you can have up to THREE people in the room if 2 are children! I have booked travel for my family (6 of us) in 2 bedrooms with nobody batting an eye.

1 zone, 6 people, meals and first class confort for 40,000 points each way! An absolute bargain!

A bit off topic but I just noticed that the 1,000 bonus point for the Winter promotion have posted.
