While the reporting is of the "thingies' and "do-hickies" varietal, some here may enjoy this well-written 'essay-logue" of Dominique Browning appearing in Today's New York Times;

http://travel.nytimes.com/2011/06/05/travel/dominique-browning-on-a-train-trip-with-her-two-grown-sons.html

Brief passage:

  • We descended into the abyss that is Penn Station and found our compartments, filled with delightful contraptions squeezed into a small space. There was an artful configuration of a sink that, when filled, could be tipped up so that its contents would spill into the toilet below. A high shelf turned out to be a narrow bed, a source of unending delight to my sons, who replayed childhood skirmishes about the top bunk.

    Theo was delighted by the cozy scale of the room. “This is how I want to live,” he announced. I was surprised by this glimpse into his evolving design aesthetic. Then I wondered, a tad cynically, where exactly the 15 pairs of jeans would fit. But I held that thought.

Lovely piece. Train trips are enjoyed for many reasons, including a turning inward to examine one's soul.

YES! - YES!

It isn't just about being interested in things railroad..... it's on train trips that I have the opportunity to read, reflect, and gaze out the window without interference and at my own pace. Without train rides I'd have to go hide in a rustic cabin in the mountains to recharge.....

Personally, I prefer indoor plumbing
