For all you iPhonies (iPhonites? iPhoniacs?) out there, an Amtrak app! (Gonna see if it works on my new iPad 2.)

AMTRAK LAUNCHES FREE iPHONE APPLICATION

Provides quick and convenient travel planning

WASHINGTON - Amtrak passengers can now plan trips, purchase tickets, modify existing reservations, check train schedules and status, and view station information from the convenience of an iPhone® with the free Amtrak application (app) now available through iTunes.

The new app provides quick, convenient and on-the-go Amtrak travel planning and organization. Customers can purchase one-way and roundtrip tickets that can be printed at a Quik-Trak machine, picked up from an agent or mailed. Passengers will be able to access the latest train arrival and departure information for their itinerary.

Customers can use the app to show the nearest station to their current location and obtain addresses, directions, amenities and hours. Users will be able to use their Amtrak.com account to see all trips booked and modify existing reservations including changing dates or trains and upgrading seats.

Amtrak customers can also utilize the entertaining Passport feature to share their travels on Facebook or Twitter.

Customers using other web-enabled mobile devices can access the Amtrak mobile website at m.amtrak.com. This site provides features available on Amtrak.com in a mobile-friendly format.

It looks great but needs OS 4. Since I still have the old iPhone I can't use it. Was waiting for the iPhone5 to come out so I could upgrade. Getting tired of waiting. Come on Steve Jobs, let's get it out there!

The reviews of the app are quite good. I use their mobile site now and it is not so good.

Vicki--How old is your iPhone? I have the iPhone 3GS which I think is about 2 years old. I am running OS 4, and have been for quite some time. Have you done a "sync" with iTunes to see if new software is available for your phone?

I am also waiting on the iPhone 5. I really want the 4 because the display is so much clearer than the 3 (I have the iPod Touch with Retina Display), but because I have a two year contract with AT&T, it will time out better for me to dump AT&T when the 5 comes out and go back to Verizon. I have absolutely horrible cell phone service and coverage with AT&T--something I've never experienced before with Verizon (and GTE Mobilnet before them). I lose coverage and get "No Service" as soon as I move into the northeast part of town, which is totally unacceptable for this area.

Also, the Apple rumor-mill says that the new iPad that will also be coming out during the holidays will be called the "iPad Pro"---just like the MacBook/MacBook Pro line of computers.

Just downloaded the App, excellent was on a recent trip and kept checking our status on m.amtrak.com, already working fairly well but the app seems even better although its passport stamps feature for checking in at stations seems like a stupid battery drain and if I could only enter existing stations I've visited. Taking photo essays of them is a huge hobby of mine, and I have 76 currently on my website.

Smitty, I have a three year old iPhone, prior to 3GS. I found that I can't update the OS when I tried to download another app that required OS4.

I agree about AT&T, here in LA there are many areas where I get no signal including at the Redondo Pier. I may change to Verizon, not sure yet. My hope is, when the 5 comes out, the price on the 4 will drop to $100.

I'm checking those Virgin Air prices daily, waiting for the best one to FLL. Got notice of recent sale but my return date falls outside the range.

Did you get the notice for the 24 hour one-day only sale? I think it was today or yesterday. They had another 24 hour sale about a week ago, and I was able to book SFO-LAS for $49 each way.

Interesting about not being able to get OS 4 for your iPhone. I guess there is a model older than mine....I thought mine was the oldest. All I know is that I kept waiting and waiting for the iPhone to become available on Verizon, but I gave up after waiting almost 2 years. I switched to AT&T, got a 2 year contract, and paid $299 for my 3GS. Two weeks later, they announced the iPhone 4 AND that it would be available on both networks. And the price of my phone? $49 at WalMart. [Mad]
