Two big trips on the horizon. MKE->EMY-> SEA->PDX->EKH in June/July. Not entirely on AGR, but roomettes when applicable. I'll end up in Indiana visiting my daughter and then head back to Milwaukee on #29 and the Hiawatha. I'm spending a night in Seattle & a night in Portland to have some clam chowder, ride the Talgo trains ( that Wisconsin almost had), and return east via the Columbia Gorge. I planned this trip 3 years ago only to have the CZ rerouted through Wyoming the day I was to travel. Many have said that's an interesting route, but I'm taking the trip for the westbound scenery out of Denver. I have my fingers crossed that I won't run int,o the same problem this year!
The other big trip will be in January 2013 when my daughter, son-in-law and I travel from Elkhart to the Izaak Walton Inn to celebrate my 70th birthday We have roomettes 5&6 both ways and are looking forward to a great trip!

Enjoy the scenery. But since you'll be traveling during high season, be sure to stake out your spot in the California Zephyr's Sightseer Lounge immediately after breakfast, if that's where you want to sit.
The car is nearly always crowded -- and stays crowded -- once the train heads into the Rockies. Many passengers camp out there all day long. It's not unusual to see latecomers walk into the car and find every seat already taken.

That's my plan, Dilly! I chose the dates for maximum daylight and expect to be glued to my seat from early AM until lunch.

Mr. Dilly and Ms. McFarland, the day of providing 140 (28 x 5) non-revenue seats for 242 passengers (the theoretical capacity of an as delivered 11 car Zephyr) is gone gone gone....and ain't a comin' back.
So for that matter are "lounges in the sky' aboard aircraft.

I understand that, but until a roomette has windows on both sides of the car, I'll sit in the lounge. And don't suggest I upgrade to a bedroom, because the view out the "other" side is not exactly user-friendly.
