Some rather lofty plans for the development of the Amtrak Sacramento station and creation of a intermodal transit hub:

http://www.sacbee.com/2012/05/27/4517624/bright-future-for-railyard.html

I think if all they did was refurbish the inside and outside of the Amtrak station, along with track diversion & replacement, that would be enough. I do like the plan for a light rail expansion to Truckee and Reno. I don't know if they will ever see a Calif. high speed rail connection to Sacramento, as originally planned.

Another Pike Fish Market? Well, maybe.

Now, if they can only come up with the money.

Having been 'on the ground' (and not just passing through) in Sacramento three times, I am fascinated by this project. (I went through a phase 7-10 years ago of being very interested in the 1st transcontinental railroad and a visit to Sacramento is a MUST for anyone wishing to learn about that.)

I note from the photo that work is well underway to relocate the passenger platforms over to much nearer the old Southern Pacific shops. This will allow them to straighten out that funky curve just east of the existing platforms and, if nothing else, move freight through the area more quickly.

Looks like there will be a tunnel from the station building to the platforms and it looks to me like that's going to be at least a 150 yard... perhaps more.... walk.
