Althought the story doesn't explicitly state as much, I don't think there's a better explanation. Sorry for the Engineer. http://www.modbee.com/2012/07/10/2276616/body-discovered-near-train-tracks.html

Tragic for sure, and very rough on the engine crew. I love the first comment, blaming it on "Obama's new world order." Jeez, about as lucid a comment as when the Dems say everything is Bush's fault.

Rough on the engine crew and rough on the suicide's family, too,

Many foamers savage the suicidal victim for causing emotional harm. They cannot seem to appreciate the mental hell that drove the victim to the action, but treat it as a moral defect instead.

It's sometimes hell for emergency responders also. I have certain memories burned into my brain forever---visions that won't go away. It ain't fun.

Ocala Mike, I have given uip reading the electronic comments on our local rag. Turns out there are aobut 10-15 "regulars" who are so idealogical that it seem like any story or letter is fodder for a twisted comment relative to their political leanings. Tiring for sure, and never logical or even lucid.

Smitty, I heard a first responder once say, "there are things you learn you can never unlearn". I guess most people can somehow compartmetalize these things. Hope I never have to.

That's one of the ways of coping. There is also critical incident stress debriefing as well as counseling. Free counseling is offered whenever we are placed into horrible situations. But the person you heard is right, you can't "unlearn" it for the simple fact that it is literally burned into your brain. I have visions that I wish I could undo--truly. They're not appropriate to repeat, but they're about as bad as it gets. In public safety, we've all got stories like this. And after seeing just about the worst thing a human can possibly see and touch and be involved in, followed by someone complaining about their neighbor's loud TV, well, that's why we're sometimes grumpy and not so eager to kiss someone's *** and say we'd be happy to help with their "big problem".
