Hi all -- Here is my latest AMTRAK route guide from my web site -- Omaha to Chicago.

http://www.railroadrich.com/guide_16d.html

Enjoy it. I will probably have to finally change from my Windows XP machine to a new one (plus a newer version of my web site software) before I do too many more of these!

Again Rich, more great work.

Lest we forget, I too resisted the change away from XP - mainly because Lotus 123, which I used throughout my entire professional life, is no longer published for any Win OS after 7.

Set 8.1 to Desktop, and I think you will feel quite at home.

Finally, MSFT is now talking about Win 10 (there will be no 9). This system will default to the Desktop, and the default "touch tiles' of 8.1 will be an "OK if you want 'em, they're there" for the Millennials.

Microsoft: A firm that supports all manner of defensive software vendors, because they provide so many security leaks.

My big concern is that at least two of my software programs (De Lorme Topo USA and 3-D Topo Quads -- vintage 1999), which I use to generate the maps in my railroad guides, may not work on Windows 8 or 10, and DeLorme has long since discontinued that software, with ZERO usable alternative packages

I have heard rumours that Windows 9 won't appear because too many lazy programmers look for "Windows 9*" in code to support different versions of Windows - ie looking for Windows 95 and Windows 98. It would not be unreasonable to think this may well be true.

Rich, great route guides. Amtrak needs to run a daylight train to Omaha to make full use of it!

I wonder if there is a way to use Googlemaps.com, satellite view for your maps. Perhaps a screen shot of the appropriate level of detail could be added as an image in the guide??

Sure I could use Google Earth for my guides, but there are no elevation contour lines, and not everything is labeled -- topo maps have MUCH more detail and are easier to read.

Glad you enjoyed the Omaha guide.
