Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has shown of couple of really great train movies this past week.
One was The Train" (1964) with Bert Lancaster and Paul Scofield.
This evening, TMC had a showing of "The General", from 1926. Possibly Buster Keaton's best movie. He did most all the stunts, himself.
The movie was filmed along the Oregon, Pacific, and Eastern line south of Cottage Grove, Oregon. Here is the famous train crash scene, which was filmed on a railroad bridge over the Row River:
No computerized special effects here. The scene cost around $50,000 back then. Today, that one scene would cost over half a million. They say you can still find debris, from the train wreck, in the river.
The railroad depot scenes were filmed at the Nashville, Chattanooga, & St. Louis Union Depot in Chattanooga, TN.
