What are the best train trips in Australia? I am offering my opinion on the subject, so here is a short list of what I consider are the best train trips in Australia. In doing so, I know that there are many other very worthy rail trips.

ONE: The "Sanannahlander" from Cairns to Forsayth, in Queensland. THis is one of the most scenic rail trips in Austalia. A 1960's diesel rail car is used, and the trip is run over four days, once a week. Overnight stop overs are made, and side bus trips are provided.

TWO: The "Ghan" from Adelaide to Darwin. The longest North-South rail journey in the world! Nice scenic highlights and tours in Alice Springs and Katherine. High fares, but worh doing. Best option, fly one way, train the other.

THREE: The "Indian Pacific" from Sydney to Perth. A three day trip. High fares like the Ghan, but very good quality dining, lounge and sleeping car services.

FOUR: The "ABT" rack railway in Tasmania. Narrow gauge steam, and very scenic!

I can discuss other Australian rail trips, next time.
