Who offers cab rides in steam locomotives here in the U.S.? In no particular order, here are places where you can actually RUN a steam locomotive - in 2005:
3. The Pere Marquette 1225 did an "Engineer/Fireman for an Hour 2004" this past year, but I was not able to find any mention of such a trip on their web site for 2005: URL for the 1225 - who was the model for the locomotive in the movie: "Polar Express": http://www.mstrp.com/schedule.htm
4. When the SP 2472 is again under steam: (She is in the process of getting her "Form 4", which is mandatory before she is allowed to be fired up again.) Our popular "Rent A Locomotive" program will again allow people to run the SP 2472 - a 1921 4-6-2 - in our Hunters Point Naval Shipyard location. also newhope&ivyland you pay 40 bucks for a cabride in their 2-8-0 when it runs or 1 of their historic diesals.you mustt be 18 or older but im 12 and i got in the 2-8-0's cab but not a cabride.

Took the steam engine cab ride out of New Hope last fall. (Sorry, you don't get to play engineer)
Dang, it felt like I was in a unbalanced rotary washing machine. The track and ties are not state-of-the-art and we kind of were shaken around! 12 mph over some of the real bad track still felt like 50.
But what a GLORIOUS experience- the sights, the sounds, the smells (and the shaking!).
Somehow I don't think the diesel will be half as much fun, but I'm going for it this year....

Hey I feel like I must rain on your parade,althought I don`t want to. Where I work due to changing insurance reg`s most steam engine cab rides can no longer be offered. Now if you are at the right place and time you might find a crew or two that will sneek you one.

I've just returned home from running #93 (A 1909 2-8-0) at the Nevada Northern Railway. It is an experience of a lifetime for the serious enthusiast.
The Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, KY also offered cab rides the last time I was there. Check their website though because they only operate L&N 152 (a 4-6-2 from 1905 or so) on selected weekends.

I was at Railfest in Durango, Colorado in August--the D&SNGRR is now selling cab rides for a $1000! Of course, you have to provide lace-up boots, but they give you a cap, a long sleeved shirt and overalls to wear. Might check out their website--Durangotrains.com
