Trainsmag.com just reported that the first loads of apples and pears Amtrak has hauled out of Washington state should arrive at East Coast destinations today and tomorrow.
The first two reefers were loaded Tuesday and Wednesday at warehouses in Wenatchee and Brewster, Wash., as part of The Washington Fruit Express program managed by Amtrak's partner, Expresstrak. The cars ride east to Chicago behind the Empire Builder, their produce bound for Pittsburgh,Philadelphia, and New England.
Amtrak, ExpressTrak and Washington State transportation officials hope the program will mark the beginning of regular Amtrak perishables service.

I am glad to learn that. I think it was last year I read an article about the Washington Assn. of RR Passengers, which I think was helping get fruit shippers talking to Amtrak as a prelude to increased passenger train frequency. I passed the article on to other rail activists here in Virginia as something to keep in mind when we try to get more service: look for shippers who have time-sensitive cargo that might go by Amtrak.

Wonderful. I live in Eastern Oregon and I have been waiting for this to happen - I wish them good luck. I have missed our train, the Pioneer, so I have great hopes that someday soon it will run again hauling perishables also, along with me! Our Oregon Senators are very supportive of Amtrak and have held many meetings to regain our train. Amtrak may have its faults but for those of us that love the train want it to keep going and expand.
