A friend of mine is interested n taking a train from California to Mexico. Is there any such thing or does one have to find their way into Mexico first?

Mr. Toy, In California, the Trolley in San Diego goes as far south as San Ysidro, which is close walking distance to the border. However, there are no passenger trains on the Mexico side at Tijuana. I don't think there are any international intercity trains, but there might be Mexican train service available in Juarez, across the river from El Paso, TX. Amtrak's Sunset goes through El Paso.

Forget intercity passenger service in Mexico. There is none. Only some commuter services and tourist trains survive. Amtrak proposed running service from San Antonio to Monterrey as part of their "Network Growth Strategy" but it hasn't materialized.
