I don't know if there are any new books, but "All Aboard" by Jim Loomis and "USA by Rail" by John Pitt are themselves more than enough to plan any rail trip within the U.S. Get one or both of these and planning will be easy.

Have a great trip!

My favorite book is called "Rail Ventures" written by Jack Swanson. The best part is that it lists every train and what you see along the way. It gives minutes from the last station all along each route. I always photocopy the pages for the particular route I am travelling and read them along the way. It gives a lot of information about each route.

Good Luck
Dean

I found John Pitt's book, USA by Rail plus Canada, particularly useful and comprehensive, especially for a visitor new to North America. There's also a great website at http://www.USA-by-Rail.com where you can find more advice.
