Red Mountain Press, publishers of "Birmingham Rails: The Last Golden Era," is pleased to announce that legendary rail photographer Frank Ardrey, Jr. will make a rare appearance at the last public signing of the book dedicated in his honor.
The 88-year-old Ardrey, a retired Southern Railway sales representative and an avid historian of Birmingham railroads, is best known for his remarkable photographic account of the steam-to-diesel transition from the 1940's and '50s in an around the Birmingham railroad district. Dozens of Ardrey's dramatic black & white images are featured in "Birmingham Rails" through the courtesy of Ardrey's long-time friend and contemporary photographer, David Salter, who now holds the Ardrey collection.
On Saturday, March 29th, Ardrey will join co-authors Marvin Clemons and Lyle Key for their last public signing of "Birmingham Rails," to be held at the Smokey City Rail Show in Birmingham. Show times are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A map to the show's location can be found on the publisher's website at www.birminghamrails.com.
Released in August 2007 in a numbered limited, more than 1,600 copies of "Birmingham Rails" have been sold. Once the remaining supply is exhausted, according to the publisher, the book will be permanently out of print.
