I just returned from a round trip on the Silver Star from Raliegh, NC to West Palm Beach. FL. This was my first trip since 1990. The Viewliner Sleeper is great. I even used the shower. The car attendant service was un-even. The lady on the southbound trip was very helpful and never far away. The attendant on the northbound trip was hardly there. The Diner was first rate though. Good food and excellent service. On the southbound eg the train was 45 min. late arriving in Raliegh. This was not a problem as I had arrived on the Piedmont from Charlotte on time. however, the northbound leg was 2 hours behind schedule by time we reached Jacksonville, FL. The Conductor was aware of the problem so he let me get off in Cary, NC which is the stop before Raliegh. Ohterwise I might have missed my connection to Charlotte. If you want to go to Florida this is the way to go.

Amtrak's Silver Service has always been very successful. One of the main reasons in my opinion are the multiple daily trains. The San Joaquin trains in California's Central Valley clearly exhibit the fact of more trains equal more passengers. A sixth train from Bakersfield is to be added in the very near future. Once daily or worse 3 times per week service will never allow the flexiblity needed to maximize utilization of the Amtrak system.
