I know we have to pack light, but since the whole vacation is 12 days, with different climates, there won't be much room to pack amusements (games and snacks)for our kids, ages 7 and 9.
Does anyone have recommendations for GREAT items that will be worth the space and hassle?
We won't be bringing a DVD player, game boys or the like (I don't allow that stuff).

A pack of cards is always a good bet. You can get travel games that are small, like scrabble, monopoly, connect 4, snakes and ladders, that sort of thing.
I admire your stance on electronic games! If only more parents were like you...

If you don't have a digital camera, this might be the time to get an inexpensive one & extra memory cards. My grandson (now age 8) has had his own digital camera for two years & loves to take tons of pictures of everything & everyone. He ends up deleting most of them & very few make it to actually being printed when he gets home, but he has a blast taking the pictures & instantly seeing the results. 2 megapixels would be enough to get some decent shots for yourselves & inexpensive enough for them to play with.

I just returned from 9 days with my 7 year old. 4 day and nights on trains (CZ/LSL from Denver to NYC and back). I also don't allow electronic games (we don't even have TV) although he does know how to use my computer.
He kept a spiral notebook journal and made daily entries - pictures and comments on the day; bring several decks of cards - some regular, some games like Old Maid and Go Fish and Uno. Many of the kids on the train had electronic stuff but were more than willing to make friends and join in card games. We also counted VWs. I gave him his own recyclable cameras from Walgreens so he could photograph whatever he wanted. He was also glad to have along one of his stuffed animals.

I found out about a puzzle game called "Railroad Rush Hour" that I think I'll get - one of those Mensa or Parents Choice award winning games.
There's also a card game called Express - about trains, too. Not that everything has to be railroad themed, but I thought some of you out there might be interested.

Can anyone tell me what "maps" people talk about when they suggest the kids might enjoy marking the path of the train on a map. Is this some sort of railroad map? I'm not sure it regular road maps show the railroad lines, and a lot of the route we're taking is in the wildreness, I think. I have ordered from AAA the maps of each state we're going through, but this seems like a lot of "extra" stuff.
