Does anyone know of a source for fuel consumption comparisons between air travel and rail travel? I once caught a tidbit on the news but have been unable to find any other statistics.

My thinking is that this data could be used as an argument for saving passenger rail the next time I write to my rep and senators in D.C.

Passenger rail could be viewed as a strategic necessity as the war on terrorism could reduce the amount of oil we have available.

Any thoughts?

A train is somewhere around 10x as efficient as an airliner. Look on the NARP page (http://www.narp.org/) and Mr. Toy's webpage (don't have the URL- Help?) for some facts. Thank you for writing to your officials.

Mark, I think I found that information at the Bureau of Transportation Statistics at http://www.bts.gov/

Unfortunately, I don't recall exactly where on their site it is, so you may have to do some digging. I think it may have been in a .pdf file I downloaded, which I have at home. I'm at work right now. If I find it later I'll report back.
