I just completed another 2500 mile Amtrak trek. The Ann Ruteledge #303 ran on time from STL to KCY; the Chief #3 departed KCY on time (giving me time to dash over to Jack Stack for a bbcue sandwich) and arrived LAX half an hour early (giving me time to run up to Chinatown to grab some food); the Starlight (#14) ran on time to SLO and then began to pull over and slow up arriving in OKJ at 11pm, and hour and a half late. All train busy to very busy with mostly happy customers. Everything worked, the food was good and scenery awesome.
There was no Rails&Trails guide on the Chief but there was on the Starlight between SBA and SLO.

I forgot to mention that near the CO/NM border west of Trinidad we saw two brown bears! One sitting at the edge of the woods watching the big silver snake go by and about 10 minutes later another waddling through the underbrush. Beautiful creatures - so much more so than their indolent brothers I had seen in the STL zoo. We also saw a dozen or so antelope, pronghorn I think. And there were quite a few dolphins sporting off the CA coast.
