The post on fuel consumption should read 4 gallons per HOUR at idle on a UP freight locomotive. The dollar sign was a typo in the fuel consumption of 750-800 gallons per hour of jet fuel for a 737.

Also keep in mind that UP pulls hundred-plus-car-long freight trains through mountainous territory whilst Amtrak trains are typically ten to fifteen passenger cars long, not nearly as heavy.
