Does anyone know if it is possible to travel from Deland, Fla. to Killeen, Tex. via Amtrak these days -- since the Sunset isn't yet open from DLD to NO.

Two other possibilities, neither very attractive though.

One might get off the Silver Star in Raleigh, sightsee, catch the Carolinian to Greensboro, wait five hours for the southbound Crescent, spend the following night off the train in New Orleans, and then go with the Sunset from there. This is a long option though as you would be in transit over four nights and not just three.

One could also use the bus connection from Richmond to Charlottesville, VA to connect to the Cardinal off the Silver Service trains.

Saves absolutely no time.....in fact this increases the number of hours you spend on the train....but some might feel they are making a slightly more 'direct' trip by not going all the way to Washington to change.

Thanks to all who replied. It looks like there is no easy way to get there from here ;^D. Maybe the quickest way would be to take a bus to NO and than the Sunset to near Killeen.

Sojourner, who is on a journey right now, is looking into doing something similar to this on a future trip later this year or in early 2007.....which is not nearly as far away now as when she first started playing with ideas for the trip.

If trains are on-time you would be looking at about a 10-11 hour daytime layover BUT the Raleigh station is right downtown and is served by local transit. Being the state capitol and a college town (and not just NC State either) there are government buildings, museums, parks, college campuses, and the state fairgrounds all within a couple of miles of the train station.

Or perhaps the bus to Atlanta and catching the Crescent from there. Not sure which would be the shorter bus ride for you though, Atlanta or New Orleans.
