First, our sincerest condolences to anyone reading this forum who has been affected by this disaster. Unexpected loss is the worst kind of loss.

This is a bad time for Amtrak to have an accident, especially one with multiple fatalities. No doubt, its congressional detractors will use this indingnantly as a case-in-point for its breakup. Some still undecided on the issue may sway unfavorably.

Any thoughts as to what the outcome will be?

How many times have you heard of a plane crash with hundreds on board and only 4 fatalities. Granted, one is too many and I feel for the families. Amtrak doesn't own or maintain the tracks in most places and shouldn't be blamed.

My 2 cents.

Mark

On Sept. 11th, over 3000 people died, yet planes are still flying. Accidents happen in every form of transportation, and I can't believe that Amtrak's enemies would (want to) use this against it. Don't forget that Auto Train is one of the few LD's that the guys over in Florida and Washington DC want to KEEP.

Lest anyone forget, immediately prior to the attacks, all airplanes were grounded for that period of time that seemed an eternity. (Remember seeing no planes or helicopters in the sky during the day or at night, or hearing any? I live close to Newark Airport, and believe me, that was quite eerie. The only thing to see in the sky, besides stars, were military aircraft with their distinctive red lights.)
