The thread "Travel on the Vermonter" prompted me to ask a similar question about the Three Rivers from NYP to CHI -- because of the layout of the tracks into PHL 30th Street, does the Three Rivers also travel "backwards" between NYP and PHL? (I knew about the Vermonter before)

Having ridden on the Three Rivers several of times in the last 2 years, I don't remember changing directions. Granted I was in a sleeper, I still don't believe we changed direction.

It seems that you HAVE to go in reverse at some point between NYP and PHL, even if only to back into 30th Street from the "Y" at the Zoo, since the line from NYP to PHL and PHL to CHI are the same tracks

From NYP, The Three Rivers runs with passengers seated backwards from NYP to PHL. At PHL 30st Station the E-60 loco is detached from one end, while at the other end mail and express vans and P-42s are added. That is, it runs directly from NYP into PHL, and reverses straight out.
Upon arrival at CHI it is wye-ed before reversing into the station.
In the other direction there is no wye-ing at CHI - the train draws out of the station and a switcher puts mail and express on the emd. At PHL the P42s are removed and an E-60 is added to the other end and passengers travel backwards from there to NYP.
