Don Phillips of the Washington Post seems to be the only news reporter in the entire US of A who seems to understand the real issues surrounding Amtrak. He recently had a Live Online discussion which you can see here: http://discuss.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/zforum/02/business_phillips0628.htm

I also heard him answering call-in questions on NPR about a week ago and he was good.

Today I heard a rumor that he may be on Oprah in the next couple of weeks to talk about Amtrak. Anyone else heard that?

Phillips has LONG been THE transportation journalism specialist. Heck, he used to write for Passenger Train Journal in the 70s ... his article was "The Potomac Pundit" even then...

I think WSJ has a couple of folks who specialize in transportation. But that's it, nationwide! Transportation journalism does not attract paying readers in general press.

Mr. Phillips has always been a great railroading journalist.
If he's on Oprah, I'll be sure to bring my tissues.
I wonder if he could be a Senator?

Mr. Phillips is a very good journalist. He has monthly column in Trains magazine. This month, he's talking about the new Amtrak president David Gunn. If you get a chance, read the article. I found it interesting.
