I regularly see newly-painted freight cars with "historic" reporting marks. Gondolas with a UP shield and "MP" (Missouri Pacific) reporting marks.

Same with back east, I see freight cars with "NYC" (New York Central) marks.

Is this to help keep the freight rosters straight so the numbers don't duplicate?

NYC, PRR, MP arestill " Official " reporting marks. When Conrail split up, they used NYC and PRR designations to help CSX and NS keep track ( no pun intended ) of who owned what.
