I am planning a model RR that fetures cajon pass . it will be a walkaround 25x25 foot layout with an engine house at SBD and a crossover to restore trains to right hand running past summit.Is 25' by 25' big enough? My scale is HO (unfortunately)and I have never built something this big before. Any help will be appreciated. rick Warbonnets and Daylights forever

Hello friend, 25 by 25 is big enough, here's a plan I built in N-scale which fitted into a 12' by 8' room so it would be ideal for your H0 scale. If you fancy using it or part of it, feel free. Shamus Posts: 79 | Registered: Mar 2001

I think that you have plenty of room. I have some advice for you:
This sounds like a major undertaking. Please take a long time to plan your railroad. Read over lots of books. I have found that most libraries have a lot of books on model railroading. Read through a lot of model railroading plan books and study the diagrams. When you begin planning your layout, draw several maps. Also, draw some section views. Don't just go on your first instinct. Plan out several ideas, and the ideas you like best will come together in your mind.

If you don't already know about it, check out the Cajon Pass Group at: http://cajonpass.tripod.com/ They can also be found thru Yahoo Groups. There have been several posts there on Cajon layouts in particular Ted York's. His web site has tons of info on the pass' history. You will also find numerous discussions on structues in the pass as well as San Berdoo. It also wouldn't hurt to get on the email list as well.

Pardon me if it's obvious, but there's a great HO Cajon Pass in "The Classic Layout Designs of John Armstrong" available at any model RR dealer. It's a 10 x 20, so your space should do well. I've been thinking of using it, but my attic doesn't work and my garage is not (yet) available for trains. Also, I'm an east coaster and must do something NEC.
