April 24, 2001 Long Beach Press Telegram:
A Groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday 4/23 near the San Gabriel Mission. This is the beginning of a $912 Million seven year project covering the ex-SP main line east of San Gabriel. (For those not familiar with the area, the tracks between San Gabriel and East LA are already below grade, from a construction project during the 70's. That project ended the Amtrak [Sunset] stop at Alhambra, because the relocated tracks were too far from the station.)
