Does anyone know what this is?

I saw this from the Coast Starlight in Dunsmuir on the morning of May 25th. It looks like some sort of office on rails, Through the windows I could see people working at desks. On the side it said "TODAY'S DATA, TOMORROW'S TECHNOLOGY"

That is a track geometry car - it measures various things about track condition, using "NDT": "Non-Destructive Technology". Yes, it DOES look ODD! Perhaps the railroaders here could be more specific.

Mr. Toy,
Check out the "what's new" section of trainweb. The listing right next to your Starlight Travelogue on June 6 mentions the layoffs caused by the suspension of Amtrak's Vermonter. In that article, it discusses a Track Geometry car and what it found on that line.

Thanks for the info, guys.I read the story and it was interesting. Its comforting to know they have a way of checking that stuff that holds up our wheels.
