I understand that some rolling stock manufacturers made use of a "reflectoscope" device to inspect the metal, but I don't know much else about this instrument.

Does anyone know if this is true?

How was this noted on the cars, if they were manufactured with this technology? I heard that it was a lightning bolt figure.

Please refer me to any pictures or diagrams of this symbol or whatever notation they used.

What lines did these cars end up on? C & O?
