Just checked Amtrak's website to see what the fare would be from N.O. to Chicago later this year. It appears from their website that you can no longer take the #58 train north from N.O. to Chicago. You have to take the train to Washington, D.C. & then take it to Chicago. Does anyone know what happened to the northbound #58 train?

I just checked the Amtrak website, and there is space through NOL-CHI.#58 doesn't go through Washington.# 19-20 goes NOL WAS.

Not certain why you had a problem, Ms. Carol. A few moments ago, I made an inquiry for May 25 departure, and NOL-58-CHI popped up as first choice. NOL-20-WAS-29-CHI was listed as well, but not as "top pick".

Sometimes the site will give some strange answers. This is not limited to Amtrak. The airlines will do it too. To check times in relation to a1's question, I put in Sacramento to Galesburg, thereby intending to get CZ only, and got 1. The CZ, and 2. bown the vailley, bus-train-bus to Los Angeles then the SWC to Galesburg. That is mild compared to some of the strange ones I have gotten from Northwest Airlines.

Carol - you may have put in an "incorrect" departure time on the web site. #58 leaves NOL at 1:55 PM, and #20 leaves at 7:20 AM. If you put in a "morning" departure time, the web site may have given you a routing of #20-#29 or #20-#51 through WAS, whereas if you put in an "afternoon" departure from NOL, maybe it would have given you the #58 route. Just a hunch, but, you never know -- as George says, sometimes you just get strange routings on that web site.

The other possibility is that #58 may have been sold out for the day you put your reservation in for.

Unlike some travel sites, such as Holiday Inn @ http://www.ichotels.com Amtrak will acknowledge the train exists even if it is sold out in both classes of service.
