Disclaimer: this is going back several years! I went there on an overnight trip from New Orleans. As it was an afternoon arrival and a morning departure, I didn't get much time to look anywhere beyond the area around the Amtrak station and hotel in which I was staying. Looking at Google Earth I can locate both - head east out of the station onto W Capitol St and the Mayflower cafe is on the right before you reach the park (left), and the hotel a few blocks further on the right - you can see the swimming pool and jacuzzi from the satellite photos.

The Mayflower serves a good dinner and still appears to have good reviews. The hotel would appear to be the Edison Walthall, though if that is Jackson's best (their claim) then I'd hate to see worse. It was faded motel quality at best - not bad, especially for the rate, but certainly not GBN standard. Of course, it may have been refurbished since.

Hope you get more useful feedback than that.

Thanks, Geoff. I think I found a nicer downtown hotel, based on 'Net input, and very reasonable and well located too. And we will probably go to the Mayflower!!!! I will report back after the trip.

While likely much of this material appears at my Joyride topic, I think this topic bears having some repeat of such.

As I noted, some real estate developer has placed a big bet on the King Edward Hotel. It has become a multi use facility; namely condos, hotel, office space. The hotel is managed by Hilton Garden and from a quick peek into the lobby, it looks "sharp'. Unlike many of the "commercial' brands, i.e. Holiday Inn Express, Marriott Courtyard, Hilton Hampton, this property has both an on-premises bar and restaurant - and remember it is adjacent to the train station.

The neighborhood surrounding the now Amtrak Greyhound station appears to be on an upswing. There is a massive Federal building complex within sight and such is being upgraded with some Stimulus $$$ that I'm sure Guv Haley tried his darnedest to have go elsewhere.

As I noted at the other topic, Jackson is very compact. It is less than a mile from the Station East along Capitol St to the Old Capitol museum - that seems to be the East perimeter of downtown (West perimeter or "other side of the tracks" I leave to others). The "new" Capitol complex is about a mile North and East of the station.

While I'm sure I walked right by the Mayflower Cafe, I have a feeling by myself I was gravitating towards familiarity - and that meant the Marriott on Amite St where the Turkey Club sandwich was 'typical chain hotel fare' (couple of Chardonnays rendered such quite acceptable). My Marriott Rewards card (and $5.95 for 15min) opened their business center computer to me.

I was there from arrival of 59(6) to departure of 58(7)(both OT) this past Monday. I was happy to see some of the architecture - namely law offices that looked like they could have come out of a John Grisham novel, and to sit in a peaceful (yet well patrolled by an Ambassador Squad - not cops but with radios that could get 'em there on the double if need be) public park with church bells marking the quarter hours reading The New York Times.

All told, an attractive small (pop 175K) city - and FWIW, a rate-check at either Marriott or King Edward didn't "knock me over".
