There are several presidential ranking surveys out there, such as this one that rates Joe at 14th best - and Trump 1.0 (first term) at 45, or dead last.

But the "Gold Standard" of these surveys, to me, is that compiled by CSPAN - and the one I have often cited in postings around here. That survey was last compiled during 2021. It, of course, did not rank Joe, but ranked Trump 1.0 at 41 out of 44.

This 2025 survey was expected to be completed by now and including a ranking of Joe's term and of course not including Trump 2.0.

So CSPAN; "where art thou?"

"Upon consultation with our survey's advisory team of historians, C-SPAN has decided to postpone this cycle's presidential leadership survey," Robin Newton, C-SPAN's media relations specialist, told Business Insider. "The consensus is that with a former president returning to office, conducting the survey now would turn it from historical analysis to punditry."

First, I must wonder why, when I was in Berlin during this past October, I didn't walk into Axel Springer's office (BI's owner and not that far from my hotel) and tell them what a pile of clickbait you put out over in "The States". [Razz]

It's simply too bad that the "Gold Standard" ranking survey will not be published anytime soon - possibly not until Trump leaves office.

To me, Joe does not deserve anything close to 14th; I'd put him down in the fourth quartile considering he had no business seeking a second term, especially when during his '20 campaign, he said he was only going to serve one term with his primary mission of "unifying us". Instead he cranked up the "Liberal Machine" with the "Inflation Reduction Act" to pacify Bernie, Liz, and AOC - and topped all that off by seeking a second term.

Likewise, I do not hold that Trump was the worst of 45 (he's "down there", and not hardly my Sister's "he's amongst the greatest Presidents we've had"), after all, he did deliver a strong economy during his "1,0" (should a nonconsecutive term be considered Second Term, or Second Presidency? Therefore the Newspeak of 1.0 and 2.0 should best suffice). I somehow think, along with the polled CSPAN historians, that James Buchannon gets the booby prize. History has established that he was a "Nero fiddled while Rome burned" president as the Civil War started.

The official latest word from CSPAN remains:
quote:
Since 2000, C-SPAN has conducted a survey of historians on presidential leadership each time there has been a change in administrations. For each survey, we bring in a cross-section of presidential historians and ask them to rank the country's former chief executives on the same 10 characteristics of leadership. The survey serves as an initial take on a president's term soon after they have left office and shows how the impact of a presidency has changed over time. A new survey, C-SPAN's fifth, will be released in 2025 and will include President Biden for the first time.
Sorry volk, but I just cannot consider Business Insider as a source. Mike, while I know you posted that quotation from them in good faith, anything of theirs must be taken, not with a grain, but a full salt mine.

But in the meantime, here's a survey dated March 2025 with which I had not been familiar.

Highlights:

All 45 Presidents; Lincoln #1, Joe #20, Trump 1.0 #43, A. Johnson #44, Buchanan #45.

Addendum:

Here's another with an unbashedly Liberal slant.

Highlights:

All 45 Presidents; Lincoln #1, Joe #13, GWB 43 #42, Buchanan #44, Trump 1.0 #45.

It appears CSPAN is taking the position that their survey comprises its rankings from presidents who have left office, and Trump remains a sitting President - even though he completed a term prior to his current.

I guess the survey is simply following the precedent apparently set handling Grover Cleveland's two presidencies, where such are evaluated as one.

But since the survey has obviously collected the results from its participants - which as stated includes evaluating Joe's single term, why not simply withdraw Trump's 2021 41 of 44 ranking and evaluate him come 2029 or whenever he finally leaves office?

Perhaps the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network is finally questioning who is an “historian” or not.

I do concur as to Business Insider’s credibility. As for Factinate, their Youtube channel I find distasteful enough.
