quote:CBS News is ending its radio service as part of broader layoffs while Editor in Chief Bari Weiss looks to reshape the storied network.
All positions on the CBS News Radio team are being eliminated and the service will end on May 22, according to an email that Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski sent to staff on Friday and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
“A shift in radio station programming strategies, coupled with challenging economic realities, has made it impossible to continue the service,” the email said. “We are sharing this announcement now to fulfill our commitments to our radio partners and affiliates, which require advance notice of the service’s conclusion.”
This newscast during the 5A hour (WBBM 780/105.9) has been my wake-up for likely the past sixty years.....and now it's to be gone.
As a kid, I listened to Lowell Thomas and Edward R. Murrow reporting the events of the day ("Mommy, what's Korea?" "That's a little country far away that we are helping out.")."So long until tomorrow" and "Good night, and good luck" were bywords for me.
But then, I guess I must accept that my news gathering methods - namely print newspapers - Times and Journal, radio news (I think some of the kids nowadays must ask "what's a radio"?), and NBC Nightly News - are not that of the populace at large.
It's been a meaningful seventy five years together, CBS, but you answer to your "corporate massahs" and not to me.
