I like to have the lower level rooms on Superliners. Does anyone know if there is a room selection section when making online reservations? I can't find one, therefore, I have to make reservations by phone. Not sure I always getting the lowest fare.

Although I can only dream of the day when I can afford to purchase a sleeper, I must say that I have found the operators at Amtrak to be quite accomodating when I need to purchase a low cost ticket.

I generally call them late at night, like 1 a.m. when things are slow and they can chat and access their database for cheap tickets. Like yourself, I do like using the online computer and even "Julie," but recently a human operator was able to get me a good price on a coach seat for me and my 86-year-old mother in the lower handicap area of the coast starlight from LA to San Luis Obispo for the same price as a regular seat.

Also, on the way back from Obispo, we had to make last minute changes to our itinery and a live operator exchanged our tickets for seats on the Amtrak bus and its connecting Surfliner for only an extra $5.

In short, I think those Amtrak operators can do magic and would encourage you to talk to them.

Although you can request a lower level coach seat on-line, you have to call an agent to get a lower level sleeper. I did that for our trip in March. They will accomodate your request if any lower rooms are available. Just say "agent" when Julie comes on the phone.

Thanks for your replies. I do chat with the customer service reps. They truly are helpful. I have been able to get a lower sleeper on all my trips but just wanted to make sure I had to talk to a person to do that. Thanks.

Chaslett,

How about looking up the fare on-line and then calling the customer service for the lower level room with the fare already in hand?

I like the lower level better, too.

TBlack,
That is how I have been making my reservations. It makes it easier to let the agent know what train I want to ride. Agents are usually so helpful.
Thanks for your suggestion.
