CK I agree with you. There is no excuse for rude and indifferent Amtrak employees. There seems to be a carry-over from the old days of the semi-snotty pullman Car porters who thought they were protected in their union jobs and who thought that if the customer was not likely to give a tip, why be nice! Enough of that crap! I'm serious! There are still black ca attendants and dining room guys around who behave like that! Also, some of the coldest and indiffeent employees I've come accross were youngish woman! The nastiest and unresponsive conductor I have ever seen was a woman about 35 years old who was the train boss on the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle in Feb., 1994. She also treated the car attendants very rudely. She thought she was God's gift to the riding public! Amtrak has got to get rid of such employees and make a big effort to re-train employees to extend themselves, be friendly, communicate with the passengers and be careful to respond quickly to passengers in need. After all, aside from us rail fans, the general public does not HAVE to ride Amtrak!

How does one "get rid of" a rude employee anyway? I suppose you could write complaints to Customer Service. But unless the employee did something blatantly illegal or dangerous, I can't imagine much else happening.

Wonder how many of you whiners treat Amtrack employees w/ same the respect you DEMAND from them. Don't want to use the N word here but that's the way alot of you PASSENGERS (as in NOT customers) treat us!

I can understand your frustration, cajon. That is why most of my criticisms of Amtrak are pretty much centered around things like "why doesn't the bathroom door in my train have something on which I can hang my coat."

But you're not alone. Some of the same people who criticize you also criticize me for riding in coach all the time. Evidentally these people think they are some sort of elevated species of human being because they have more money than I do. I have heard the coach car referred to as a slave ship and believe me, it hurts.

But then I reflect upon how lucky I am not to be isolated in a sardine can compartment, bereft of the Walt Whitmanesque companionship of my fellow travellers.

I have never had a problem with an Amtrak employee. I have always been treated with the upmost politeness and tact. And in the rare case that I was admonished, in retrospect, I certainly deserved it.

Any reputable company would not keep employees who are rude to their customers. Many of Amtrak's employees would have been fired long ago if they had worked for a reputable company.

A lot of people on this forum use the excuse that Amtrak does not have enough money. This is a good reason for many of Amtrak's problems, but it does not take any money at all to be polite. I nmy opinion, Amtrak is killing themselves by allowing their employees to continue with their rude behavior.

I will admit there our some rude employees and Amtrak is taken care of the problem by getting rid of employees with bad attitudes just remeber it is not easy to fire a RR employee i work for the BNSF and you realy have to screw up big time more then once to get caned you might get 30 days of without pay but we have job insurence that takes care of us.

There are many more ripe apples in the bushel than rotten.

Remember the "good' who have sincerely put their heart out to serve their passenger; forget the minority of others.

Being 'in the Union' is hardly synonomous with indifferent service. When I have visited Las Vegas, i have always found a "can do' spirit. If you have a reasonable request it is "can do'.

And i think it is a safe assumption that in a town where the palaces were built with Union pension fund money, guess what 99 44/100% of the workers have in their pocket?
