OK, my wife and I have tickets for a train trip in late August (Carbondale, IL-Seattle round trip). Given the uncertainties facing Amtrak right now, do we call and cancel and rebook later, assuming Amtrak gets its loan? Do we let things ride, assuming that if Amtrak goes belly-up, we get our money back? (And it's a hefty chunk, for us.) Just what the hell should we do. Any ideas?

I wouldn't worry about getting your money back if Amtrak does shut down. I really don't see that happening though.
If you paid for your tickets by credit card, you wouldn't have a problem at all.

I also have tickets for a trip in mid-July. I'm just going to wait and see what happens in the next couple of days. My advice would be to just hang on to them until we know for sure what the outcome will be. If indeed Amtrak does shut down for a period of time, I'm sure a refund will be available. Keep your fingers crossed... and think **LOAN**.

Its Saturday night, the 22nd and I have tickets for a 16 day Amtrak journey beginning Saturday. I have non refundable hotel rooms reserved along the way, people I am visiting and a fixed vacation time I can't change. I ve been taking annual train trips since 1990 and this is the first time I ve ever encountered this kind of problem. I always have so much anticipation for these trips, but this year a huge black cloud is hanging overhead.

I m still optomistic. I just can t believe Amtrak would shut down. The results would be catastrophic. Ive been checking the forum and the news items every few hours the last couple of days. I ll begin packing Monday. I just want to hear some good news.

We have tickets already bought on a AMTRAK VACATION in late July. I called AMTRAK and they explained that the tickets would be refunded if the WORST would happen. Everyone must e-mail, write, call their reprentatives and Washington. Explain the you support EMERGENCY funding for Amtrak and that you support continued, reliable funding for the National Passenger Rail System. Do this NOW. Congress recesses for the 4th of July holiday and action must be taken before then. Keep AMTRAK rolling!

I'm due to start a lengthy trip on Amtrak in two weeks.

For what it's worth, I received a phone call today from an Amtrak Customer Service Rep. I'd booked my trip before the new schedule changes went into effect. She wanted to let me know that the departure times for some of my trains had changed (which is something I already knew).

I mentioned that I was considering canceling my trip if the news from Washington didn't improve by Tuesday morning.

She cheerfully told me not to worry; that the media was blowing it out of proportion, and that the trains would still be running after Wednesday.

Who knows? Maybe she was clueless. Or maybe she was just parroting the "company line," as instructed by her supervisor.

She didn't sound concerned, however -- which I would definitely be if I was on the brink of losing my job. So make of it what you will.

But for those of you who've booked and paid for your trip by phone. . .

If you don't want to cancel just yet, but still haven't picked up your ticket, consider doing so as soon as possible.

In the somewhat unlikely event that Amtrak goes under, there's no telling what the refund procedure will be -- if there is one. It could be anything from filling out a simple form to taking part in a class action lawsuit.

If your paid-for ticket only exists in Amtrak's reservation database, you could have a problem proving your claim if that database is locked or otherwise inaccessible.

Remember, your credit card bill won't say anything about your travel dates, or which train you didn't get to take.

The only foolproof way to prove you booked a seat on a specific train, on a specific date -- and that you paid for it in full -- is by having an actual ticket in your hand.

Keep in mind, too, that if you've already paid your credit card bill, the card company is unlikely to get involved with your refund dilemma. After all, the Amtrak charge appeared on your bill, you didn't dispute it at the time, and you paid it. So as far as Visa or Mastercard are concerned, you're on your own.

If we're all lucky, the Customer Service rep was right. But it doesn't hurt to think ahead and protect your investment.

I wonder if Mr. Gunn has been reading this forum.......... I made my reservations for my trip (which is scheduled to begin next Friday) back in January, and got my tickets a week or two later. So I have my tickets in hand. If AMTRAK shuts down this week, I am not worried about getting the tickets credited back to my VISA. I think AMTRAK will pretty much be obligated to do that; if they don't, there will be MAJOR lawsuits..... One of the news posts on Train Web today says that Mineta is going to meet with the AMTRAK Bd tomorrow and try and work out some kind of deal where AMTRAK can get a loan guarantee or something by Wednesday. Is that really going to happen, or is this more political rhetoric and "lip service" which will never happen?

Went to Penn Station in New York a few hours ago to pick up my tickets.

The Amtrak ticket agent was upbeat and seemed certain that a shutdown "isn't going to happen" -- a sentiment echoed by the ticket agents working on either side of him.

Then again, all were "nothing phases me" New Yorkers. And maybe they're in serious denial.

But having worked for several doomed companies over the years, I know the spooky way employees look and act when waiting for their walking papers.

These guys didn't fit that description -- which could be the best barometer of how the coming week will pan out

I'd lay the odds of that between 1 chance in 1,000 or worse.
