This is not the first time this sort of exercise has occured. The names of the players have changed, but the script is about the same. The worst losses to Amtrak have been from those supposedly friendly. For example, Carter. They even ran a special train from his hometown in south Georgia to DC for his inauguration. A couple of years later, draconian cuts were made. The other "C" president had a share of cuts under his watch - Pioneer, etc. The sound is not nearly as important as the action.
Don't panic. Read the suggested actions in the article you referenced and follow through.

George, thank you thank you! for pointing out again the absolute MYTH that Democrats are categorically "more friendly" to Amtrak than Republicans, with your two examples of actions by the recent Presidents whose last name begins with "C." Sure, Amtrak has enemies on the Repub. side, but still it was RM Nixon who got Amtrak going, (as well as the EPA) back in the early 70s. Actions do speak louder...

Amtrak's demise is like the Second Coming. Often predicted, but never manifested. That's no reason the be complacent, but it is somewhat reassuring.
Even Mineta has admitted the zero funding proposal won't make it past Congress.

You know my 2 cents is that in a few weeks Bush might change his mind and all's well. So if Amtrak.com lets you book past October 1st does that mean we should not listen to that bloddy idiot? I mean I'm democratic. What if Kerry won would Amtrak not have these problems?

Yeah, and he also was seen out "hunting" with a shotgun in his hand and even firing it. He was running for office, remember. That means trying to be all things to all people. I noticed that it was the other guys that were carrying the dead ducks. Wouldn't want to offend PETA! I could try to explain how fakey his shooting looked from a hunter's perspective, but it would take too much space for a forum that is supposed to be essentially non-political.

Regarding Kerry's "Amtrak" trip, it was a comedy of errors and a joke among many Amtrakers and other railroaders. For example, his train sped through Lawrence, KS where many supporters had waited for hours to get a glimpse of the cherished candidate. Apparently no one in the campaign had told the crew to stop, so they kept right on steaming west. Later, Edwards was dispatched by bus back to Lawrence to placate the furious fans. Then, Kerry placed "blame" on the special train's conductor, for the mess-up, instead of where it belonged, his campaign. There were other problems with this trip, including the phony deal at I think Winslow, where they stopped to talk to maybe 8 people, where also happened to be some TV teams. The "hunting" trip also rang hollow to me, as Mr. Harris described.

The Blishaks have long run a travel agency promoting rail travel. Formerly, they were located in Silicon Valley @ Menlo Park.
While not for one minute am I suggesting they are anything other than reputable business people, druming it up that Amtrak may soon be dead only furthers their economic interests.
Regretably, there are people like you ignorant enough to fall for that kind of propaganda and, in your case, further disseminate it at message boards such as this.

That's not quite right. Lawrence Kansas was not scheduled as a campaign stop because the train went through town at 1:00am. However, the local media led people to believe the train would stop on its way through town, so people showed up.

Clinton wanted to kill Amtrak--he was no friend of national rail service run with government subsidies! Who says that the Democrats are friends of Amtrak? (I'm a Democrat!)

Kerry's Trip included a speed thru a place called Readers Digest New Mexico. This is a Ranch for Kids with Cancer run by National Syndicated Radio Personality and MSNBC icon Don Imus. Imus was a supporter of Kerry and spoke with him often during the campaign. Kerry supplied much comedic material as a flock of sick children stood with welcom cards early one morning as Kerrys train was scheduled to pass by. Again that "Special Conductor" messed up and sped by. The only sight of these stricken kids was a group of campaign lackeys on the back of the train smoking ciggerettes.
