I'm planning our next adventure (CHI to ORL going to see the Mouse). We've done this before, by way of WAS so we thought maybe we'd mix it up a bit and take the City of New Orleans south and the Sunset LTD from NOL to ORL.

Returning, I can't get reservations to show a R/T ORL to CHI by way of NOL. But if I just look for ORL to NOL it shows up. I realize this is a 3X/week train and I'm using the right days.

Any ideas?

Could be a simple computer glitch. But it's impossible to make even an educated guess without knowing specifics (exact travel dates you're typing in, coach or sleeper, how many travelers, type of room you want, etc.). Since it's a simple roundtrip, I'd suggest the fastest, most obvious solution: phone Amtrak and book your trip by speaking with a living, breathing reservations agent.

Amtrak: 1-800-872-7245 (say "agent" or "representative" when Robo-Julie comes on the line).

I there there is a multi-city option you can use to specify an intermediate stop (like NOL in this case). Check the timetables to specify the departure time from NOL and watch the date change (as CHI-NOL is overnight). Also be sure the Sunset is running on the day you want to take it - that tripped me up once when I tried to find a routing.

Not sure when you plan your journey, Miss Vickie, but presently the Sunset is only operating 2X weekly NOL-ORL; even the new National Timetable shows 3X.

Also, be mindful that when #2 is late, the Orlando arrival can be for somambulists and not for "regular guys and gals". If really late, it will simply terminate in Sanford.

This problem could be as Mr Norman states, but could also just be a computer glitch that is not posting all the routes available. I have encountered this quite a bit coming west to east since they put the new website up--if I put in a a local stop here to a western city, it works fine, but returning, I have to put in an extra leg to Chicago (on the multicities trip). If you don't want to do that or there aren't enough spots on the Multicities sheet, you should consider booking on the phone. You can also try out the Multicities sheet twice--it probably won't cost any different.

Hopefully, Mesdames Judy and Vickie, this matter can be laid to rest.

As of a few moments ago, the website returned an itinerary departing May 12 CHI-59(12)-NOL-2(13)-ORL

I think the problem was not allowing for the 1 Sunset trip weekly that has presently been annulled.

Is it true that the Sunset Limited is only running twice a week?

Thanks everyone. I'm not too terribly worried as we're not going til next spring but I do want to book early to get the lowest possible fares.

I just found it strange that I could book travel if I listed it as two separate trips (ORL to NOL and NOL to CHI) but it won't let me book ORL to CHI using the exact same dates.

At any rate, I will probably wait until we return from our trip on the Empire Builder next month.

See Mr. Norman's answer above. There will be times of twice a week operation. When the reason for the anullment of the third trip is over, it will be back.

I would guess that Vicki's problem may be that there's no guaranteed connection there - due to too large or small a time interval between arrival of one and departure of the other.
